Turlock, Stanislaus County
John Mitchell, a wheat farmer, founded Turlock in 1871 when the railroad crossed his land. In 1887 local growers formed the Turlock Irrigation District, the first in California, and the canals that followed turned dry wheat fields into dairies, melon patches and orchards. The district still delivers water and electricity to the city.
